Storm youth finish on a high
The first quarter started with both sides having an equal amount of decent possession but it was the defences who caught the eye and the visitors who took their opportunities. Katy Holland picked up lots of turnovers for Storm whilst at the other end South’s Becky Randall cut off Fran Plom’s space and forced long shots at goal. Storm’s Nicole Duke carried play down court well but the home side really struggled in the final phase. At the other end South’s shooter Kat Hayes took her chances well giving the visitors a 9-4 lead at the first break.
Storm Coaches Anita Hollman and Emma Blackmore made changes at the break which had immediate impact. The Attacking third took a totally different shape for quarter 2 with Kadeen Corbin, still regaining fitness proving a target and a handful at Goal Shooter. Fran Desmond, Bobbi Simmonds and Ellie Fawsitt also made a real difference and Wing Attack Hannah Button was lively in attack working tirelessly in her support play.
17 opportunities were notched up and Storm dominated the quarter bringing the scores back to even at half time and set up nicely for a cracking 2nd half.
Surrey also dominated the 3rd quarter. Holland and Mulloy’s partnership caused South a real headache whilst attacker Button, whose first position is normally Goal Attack showed nice elevation and continued to be busy in the attacking third always providing an option. Corbin was a pillar of strength under the post having 16 attempts on goal alone. Storm were being more patient with their feeding, capitalising on turnovers and Simmonds popped some nice passes to Corbin. Another powerful quarter saw Storm lead 25-20 at the end of the 3rd period.
The final quarter was gutsy and tense. Storm had more possession and more opportunities but as the tiredness set in and passes went astray. Despite huge amounts of pressure South’s Shooter Kat Hayes scored 8 from 8 in 4th period, her partnership with Ashleigh Jay and Charlotte Hall kept South’s hopes alive. At 30-22 South went on the march scoring 5 goals on a row punishing Storm’s mistakes after some tight defending and the noise increased from the crowd and the bench as the tension mounted. It was an edge of your seat finish. At 31-29 Hannah Button made an important tip and Storm regained possession. Corbin and Simmonds came good in the final minutes making everything count and Fawsitt showed maturity in the middle to deliver safe ball through court, ensuring Storm finished strongly and dominant on a 3 goal run and sealing the well deserved 34-29 win.
Storm Head Coach Anita Hollman stated; “It was a great contest and a brilliant way to finish the season”. “The young players who stepped on to court in the 2nd quarter really took on the responsibility and made an impact”.
Assistant Head Coach Emma Blackmore added; “In the 2nd and 3rd quarters we really capitalised on our turnovers, many of which came from the good work of Katy Holland who was outstanding in defence”.
Hollman finally summed up the season adding; “It’s been a real year for development and the squad have improved so much. We are really looking forward to next year, playing at Surrey Sports Park and training alongside Storm’s seniors. Having a home we can call our own with these fantastic facilities will make a real difference to everyone and we can’t wait”.
