Severn Stars 49-46 Surrey Storm

Severn Stars picked up their first win of the season as Storm were defeated in Wakefield.

Severn Stars took the lead early on as their physical playing style stopped Storm in their tracks in the opening minutes.

Despite coming into the game without a win in the 2021 VNSL, Stars took full advantage of a string of Storm errors as they led 9-3 after seven minutes.

Storm rallied back from a six-goal deficit to trail 14-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Nicole Humphrys entered the action for Storm heading into the second quarter, replacing Niamh Cooper.

Stars maintained a five-goal cushion for the majority of the second quarter, as young Sophie Kelly entered the action in place of Frankie Wells to add a different dynamic to the Storm attack.

Storm trailed 28-24 heading into the half-time break.

Felisitus Kwangwa entered the action heading into the second half and made an instant impact, adding some physicality to the Storm defence.

Severn Stars continued to control their four-goal lead, as Mikki Austin entered the action in place of Emily Gulvin, with Yasmin Parsons switching to Wing Attack.

Storm continued to close the gap heading into the end of the third quarter, as Stars led 39-37 heading into the final period.

Storm rallied back once more and took a 44-43 lead with six minutes to play.

But five unanswered goals from Stars took control of the fixture once more with three minutes remaining in the contest.

Stars won the contest 49-46, picking up their first win of the 2021 VNSL season.
