Preview: Hayes on Northumbria visit

Surrey Storm Netball will host Team Northumbria in round 6 of the Netball Superleague on Saturday evening as they look to extend their unbeaten run to 5 games.

A 48-68 win away to Loughborough last Saturday ensured that Storm kept hold of 2nd place in the table, only for Thunder to stroll past Celtic Dragons with a 45 point victory to knock Surrey down to 3rd place on points average.

But with 4 wins in 5 matches under their belts already this season, Storm will not see their 1 place drop in the table as a set back with a winnable game against Northumbria ahead in round 6.

“We know that the Superleague is going to be more competitive than ever this season, so we can’t expect to automatically be up there at the top without key results” said former Bath shooter Kat Hayes.

“Our results so far have been excellent and we are in really good spirits after 5 matches. The confidence in the squad is very high.”

Hayes has enjoyed a solid start to her first season in a Storm dress, making a number of appearances off the bench to play a part in Coach Greenway’s squad rotation policy.

“I’ve really enjoyed joining up with Storm this season- we have a great bunch of girls in this team and the set-up on and off court is really impressive, which makes it all the more enjoyable for a player.

“With Pamela Cookey and Rachel Dunn playing so well it will be tough for me to push my way into that starting 7. But I work hard, train hard and make the most of the time I get on court. We all have a part to play and every match is a team effort.”

Saturday’s visitors will be looking to quickly turn their season around if they are to stay within contention of reaching the play-offs, or at least be within touching distance heading into the mid-way stage of the season.

A solitary round 2 win against Dragons is all Northumbria have to their name thus far as a changed squad appears to have struggled to make progress in 2015.

And with Greenway feeling confident in her recent squad changes and tactical variations, we could see another starting 7 given a test this weekend ahead of the showpiece Netball London Live showdown against Hertfordshire Mavericks just a week later.

Tickets for the match are SOLD OUT but we will have updates on Facebook and Twitter from 7.45pm.
