Report: Storm cruise to victory in Cardiff

Surrey Storm recorded their biggest winning margin of the season on Saturday afternoon with a resounding 30-73 victory over Celtic Dragons in Cardiff.

A sloppy opening few minutes from both sides looked like it could be a closer affair than initially expected, but the experience within the Storm squad eventually prevailed for a huge 43 goal victory.

The win means Tamsin Greenway’s side have guaranteed a top 4 finish and therefore book their spot in the Superleague semi-finals on Saturday 18th April.

A familiar starting 7 opened the meeting at the Sport Wales National Centre but it was the Dragons who took an early 4-1 lead while both sides found their feet. The visitors quickly turned the game around to lead 8-14 at the first break.

Holding the momentum from a positive end to the first quarter, Storm launched themselves into a 12 goal lead mid-way through Q2 as the defence worked hard to create a number of successful turnovers, which was increased to 21 at the break at 36-15.

Coach Greenway rang in the changes during the break, welcoming Josie Huckle on at GK and Amy Flanagan at WD, moving Hannah Reid into GD to complete the defensive trio. Despite these changes, Surrey continued to rub salt into the wound for Dragons, and by the end of the 3rd quarter the visitors found themselves leading 52-25.

Katie Harris arrived on court at GA, Georgie Lees at WA and Laurelle Borck at C to give the whole bench a deserved run-out during the game. Flanagan picked up two quick turnovers early in the quarter, both of which were fed through to a superb Harris who tucked away goal after goal.

A superb Storm performance ended with a 30-73 victory for Surrey, who left Cardiff knowing that they will feature in the Superleague semi-finals and play at the Copper Box on the Grand Final day for the second time this season.

With the final league positions yet to be decided, confirmation of both the venue and opposition for the semi-final will be announced in due course.
