Storm sign Van Der Merwe

Surrey Storm is delighted to announce the signing of Shadine Van Der Merwe for the 2019 Vitality Netball Superleague season.

The 25-year-old defender has represented South Africa at full international level and joins Storm for her first season in England.

Van Der Merwe spoke of her excitement to join Storm for the upcoming season.

“I’m really looking forward to the new family and friends I’ll be making but most importantly I’m here to play some good netball.”

Spending five years with Gauteng Jaguars, the Pretoria-born player captained the Jaguars in the 2017/18 season.

“I felt it was time for a change and it’s the perfect opportunity to get a higher level of competition and international experience.”

Van Der Merwe joins international teammate Sigi Burger at Storm, with Van Der Merwe recently representing South Africa in the Quad Series this month.

Director of Netball Mikki Austin spoke of her delight following the confirmation of Storm’s latest addition.

“I am thrilled to have Shadine with us for the upcoming season.

“She’s making a really big name for herself very quickly and I’m really excited to work her into the defensive unit and see what kind of impact we can have on the league this year.”

Storm fans will get their first chance to see Van Der Merwe in action as Storm take part in the British Fast5 All-Stars Championships on Saturday 13 October at the Copper Box Arena.
