Surrey Storm and South African Commonwealth Games player, Sigi Burger, along with team mate Jo Trip yesterday (26 April) visited Kings College School in Guildford to kick off their 6-week tour of local schools aiming to inspire the next generation of netballers in the run up to Netball London Live 2018.
Sigi represented South Africa at the recent Commonwealth Games in Australia for the first time and left with an impressive shooting record of 94.7%, topping the attacking tables. Now back in Surrey Sigi is keen to lead the tour of school visits around the region.
“The Commonwealth Games was a fantastic experience for me having worked so hard for many years. I am delighted now to be back in Surrey playing for Storm, but also to have the opportunity to get out into the community, meet young netballers and hopefully share some hints and tips on how they too can achieve their netball dreams.”
Sigi and Jo took the opportunity to meet with Kings College students and lead a training session before spending time answering their questions. Kings College Principal, Mr McKenzie, welcomed the chance for his students to take part and meet the players.
“Sport is an essential part of both education and everyday life, especially for teenagers. We were delighted to welcome Sigi and Jo into the school to coach our netballers and show them that they can achieve their dreams if they work hard.”
With games at Surrey Sports Park all but sold out, fans’ best chance to watch Storm in action this season will be at Netball London Live at the Copper Box Arena on Saturday June 23rd, with more than 6000 netball supporters expected to hit the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
