Report: Storm fly to Victory over Jets

Surrey Storm Netball took their second 2016 Vitality Netball Superleague win of the season on Saturday night with a resounding 59-36 victory over Yorkshire Jets at Surrey Sports Park.

A cruising performance from the opening exchanges ensured that Jets were closed out early on in the tie, handing Storm their second home win in 8 days.

Coach Ratnapala named just one change in her starting 7 for the match, with Amy Flanagan replacing Katt Ainsworth at WD.

A quick turnover ball in the first couple of plays handed Storm their first lead of the night, before they rapidly passed 10 goals to Jets 5. The visitors gained some momentum towards the end of the quarter, but Storm took a 14-10 lead into the first break.

Jets continued with this momentum early in Q2, only for Katy Holland to nip it in the bud with a fine interception for Rachel Dunn to finish at the opposite end. The hosts held a 7 goal lead at half time (26-19), with Yorkshire struggling to take any clear advantage over the smart Surrey line-up.

Josie Huckle (GK) and Katt Ainsworth (WD) hit the court in Q3, moving captain Hannah Reid to GD, but it didn’t take long for the new arrivals to find their feet. Within minutes Storm had extended their lead to 10 goals (32-22) as Dunn reached full flow under the goal. Surrey ended Q3 with a turnover, giving them the 44-28 advantage for the final period.

Mikki Austin made her first appearance in a Storm dress since suffering a long-term injury midway into last season in Q4, while Kat Hayes provided excellent back-up at GA. With little to offer to even match Storm, Jets continued to make errors which ultimately cost them against a slick Surrey side, who closed out a feisty final quarter and took a 59-36 victory.

The win sees Storm sit in 3rd place in the Vitality Netball Superleague table with 2 wins from 3 rounds so far this season.

Storm return to Surrey Sports Park for their 3rd weekend in a row, as Celtic Dragons visit Guildford in search of their 1st win of the season.

The opening match of the night saw Surrey Storm NPL maintain their 100% start to the season with a dominating 57-35 win over Jets. They now travel to Loughborough Lightning in round 3 on Saturday 27th February.
